Anais De Keijser
Anais De Keijser has been working on her doctoral thesis at the Fachgebiet Entwerfen und Stadtentwicklung since January, 2015. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and a Master's degree in International Cooperation and Urban Development from the Technical University of Darmstadt. In parallel to writing her PhD, Anais is also working as the Program Manager of the international Masters on International Cooperation in Urban Development at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Having done her master thesis on ‘informality and co-production in the water supply system of Dar es Salaam’, she has structured her PhD project in line with this topic, applied to the framework in Burundi, her country of origin. Focusing on water and sanitation infrastructure in the city of Bujumbura, the PhD starts with a historical analysis of the development of the infrastructure and how it has shaped the system today.
Urban development and the water and sanitation infrastructure of Bujumbura.
Since the creation of Bujumbura by the colonial powers there has been a strong detachment between the provision of water and that of sanitary services. Water has always been considered as an essential service to provide to the citizens of the city while sanitation was considered much less important, especially for the urban poor. Until today this idea persists, as there is no clear responsibility in regards to sanitation. This has caused different problems and difficulties over time. Every time a crisis breaks out, a solution is found, but there is a lack of planning in the sanitation sector and the intrinsic link between water and sanitation is still somewhat unclear. Evidently, the sustainable maintenance of the water system is dependent on better maintenance of the sanitation situation in the city of Bujumbura.
